Professional book editing perfects your writing—YOU take the credit!

When writing a nonfiction book, put Barbara McNichol Editorial on your team. You can expect a responsive, professional book editing process that takes your writing from good to better to excellent.

A professionally edited manuscript benefits from an expert editor’s touch in these areas:

• Added artistry and persuasion, clarity and consistency

• Queries and suggestions that improve content

• Strong, on-purpose chapter titles and subheads

• Formatting consistent with publishing standards

• Jargon, wordiness, redundancy, repetition eliminated

• Correct grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and more

How does the BME Editing Process work?

It’s broken down into these parts:

• Quick-Start Planner for Editing Your Nonfiction Book (states objectives up front)

• “Set the Stage” Chapter or Article Edit (starts the editing process)

• “Hit Your Mark” Manuscript Review (gives “big-picture” feedback on your manuscript)

• “Content Ready” 3-Part Editing Process (dives into copy/content editing of your completed manuscript)

• “Attention Getting” One-Sheet Copy (provides crisp sales for book and/or speaker one-sheet)

• BME’s Editing Plan (details the project, timeline, fees, etc.)

Quick-Start Planner for Editing Your Nonfiction Book

Before you hire an editor, it’s wise to work through this Quick-Start Planner to solidify the big-picture dreams and objectives for your book. Email editor@barbaramcnichol.com to request this Planner.

“Set the Stage” Chapter or Article Edit

Several pages (10-12) of your manuscript are edited to show how BME would approach copyediting your writing. This Sample Edit leads to either:

• recommending an initial Manuscript Review before editing begins, or

• deeming your manuscript ready for BME’s 3-Part Editing Process.

“Hit Your Mark” Manuscript Review

BME will read the entire manuscript, analyze the content, structure, and effectiveness of the writing in the chapters, and assess how well it meets the objectives of your book (as stated in your Quick-Start Planner). This “macro” analysis provides on-the-mark suggestions for improving structure and solving conceptual problems.

The Manuscript Review itself comes in the form of a report that directs you to make adjustments so you can flesh out the content and revise the structure of your manuscript yourself. It’s highly recommended you take this step. You’ll find it streamlines (and shortens) the content/copyediting process that follows in the 3-Part Editing Process.

“Content Ready” 3-Part Editing Process

Your manuscript is deemed ready for this editing phase after you have:

• included all the content you want to meet your objective,

• finalized the number and order of your chapters, and

• re-evaluated the complete text for its relevancy and inclusion.

As a result of this “micro” editing phase, you’ll have a professionally polished and formatted Word document that’s ready for the next step (e.g., design, publishing, etc.)

This 3-Part Editing phase includes two rounds of content/copyediting plus a final proofread. Near the beginning (usually after the first 3 chapters have been edited), you can expect an author check in to make sure the manuscript editing meets your expectations.

Note: Additional elements such as writing/editing testimonials, indexing, researching titles, and fact-checking can be requested separately.

BME’s Editing Plan and 3-Page Sample Edit

After completing a 3-Page Sample Edit, BME will provide an Editing Plan that includes a timeline and project fee for conducting a Manuscript Review or diving into the 3-Part Editing Process.

Authors find that both of these services in tandem provides an effective one-two punch that serves them well. Plus providing back cover copy adds the attention-getting piece that can be used immediately in marketing.
